Choosing a Major

Choosing a Major Ive been reading a lot of comments lately about which majors are harder than others and omg my friend says this class is impossible and dont be concerned about the difficulty of majors its all about what you love! theres obviously a lot of strife here, and I just wanted to address the topic in a proper way. First, some questions. Is Physics major popular at MIT or not? Yes? No? What do you think of when you think popular? There are about 50 physics (full 8) majors each year (judging by junior lab roster), and perhaps 20 more 8-B majors. Add that all up and it makes up ~7% of the class each year. Is that a lot? Thats hard to say, there are 22 majors. its not as popular as say, course 6, which is home to maybe 20-25% of the students in each year. But its big enough that youll need to share resources. Fun Fact! There are 92 physics faculty at MIT- and 5 of them are women. Luckily, the ratio of men to women physics majors is slightly more reasonable. Im thinking, just by looking around, maybe 13 out of 50 for the course 8 folks. I dont have any idea of 8-B. I cant believe you do all of this?!?! How do sleep? Do you sleep at all? I dont sleep much: maybe 5-7 hrs on weekdays and 7-9 on weekends (I have been occasionally known to sleep some 14 or 15 hours though)? But keep in mind those classes I listed werent like taken all during the same term or something. Im not on speed. This semester is the only semester that Ive taken more than 2 8-classes a term. And let me tell you this is too many 8-classes. Hi Lulu.I have a small question to ask.In Part 2,section 3 of the application, there is a question asking students to list any scholastic distinctions won since entering high school. Can this include, for example, honors won in oratory in the annual English-Day competition when in grade 8 or 9? Im unfamiliar with your system, but I probably wouldnt list that, personally. How much do you have to study to get really good marks in Physics (Maj.) Depends on how smart you are. Really. Which brings me to my main point: You hear it a lot. Do what you love. F*** the rest. (Little miss sunshine?) Its very good advice for most things but Id be careful when applying this to choice of major. I know, like, what? Am I crazy? Why am I allowed on here? But theres a very good reason for this. Reasons, even. Reason number 1: There are many paths to the same destination. So you love space technology, the natural choice might then be a major in course 16- do what you love, right? Well, maybe. But you should explore your options first, and here, you have quite a few. Sure, course 16 might get you what you want, but so might course 2 (mech e), or 2-A, or 8 (physics), or 8-B, or 6-1 (ee), or even 3 (material sci) or 12 (earth/planetary), depending on the specifics. There are a lot of options. You should look through them all! Take some intro classes, talk to upperclassmen, theres a lot of valuable information out there. Narrow your field of major choices down to only subjects that really have potential or you have not tried. Never eliminate something because it is unfamiliar. High schools dont teach Chemical Engineering or Nuclear Engineering as a rule. Find out about them. Ask questions. Reason number 2: All majors are not created equal. Maybe youve already heard from person A that asking about relative difficulty of majors is shallow and theres no such thing as hard majors and easy majors, it just depends on what youre into. Well, thats very interesting and all, person A, but you are very wrong and you are doing freshmen a disservice by preaching that. While there is no value in trying to determine an absolute hardest major, you HAVE to have a sense of what youre capable of and what youre getting yourself into. I know quite a few people who have either not graduated or not graduated on time as a result of failing classes within their major and/or changing majors too many times or some combination thereof. Some majors have a lot of requirements. Take course 16 for example. 198 units of credit are required OUTSIDE of GIRs in order to graduate. Take a look at this page, thats about 16 classes. On top of the 17 classes everyone has to take. You have 8 semesters here, and the average classload is 4/semester. 33 classes in 8 semesters doesnt allow for too many electives. Thats hard in its own right. Bad at memorizing things? Maybe chemistry or brain and cog sci isnt for you. Impatient? Hate doing grunt work? Maybe cross off some of the engineering majors. Some majors may be too easy for you and bore you to death. Some majors cover some really difficult material. Some of the abstract math classes here are among the hardest in the world. You should love a challenge, youre an MIT student, but you should also love yourself. A major that is too difficult for you will only make you miserable and insecure. You wont enjoy the course material and you wont enjoy the work, you wont sleep, and worst of all, you wont learn. Whats the point of taking classes to get them over with? So what if youre not smart enough to enjoy that stuff (Im not smart enough to enjoy that stuff), your talents may lie elsewhere. Pick a field in which you will really be able to participate and positively contribute. I say this because at MIT there is a real hidden (and sometimes not so hidden) pressure to do things just because they are hard. Or, the inverse, to not pick things just because they are by and large considered easy. Kids here are on the whole pretty smart, but that doesnt mean they dont need validation. Some kids try to earn the respect of others by taking on way more than ever reasonable, dont be like that, because these kids are often the same who will, in a couple of years, feel superior to their classmates just because their major is considered harder. And you just dont want to be like that. Nobody wants to be friends with that. I said to a freshman tonight, who was trying to find a suitable second major in the sciences to her course 15 (management) intended major, Why? Because some people had informed her that 15 was a slacker major and she wanted to prove she wasnt. This made me very sad and I told her that if someone picked one major that was right for them and did it well, learned it inside out, was really excited about it, no matter what the major, I would respect him orders of magnitude more than someone else who sacrificed a deeper education in something they were really interested in just for the sake of adding the name of a second subject to their diploma. Im really bored of the people who gave her this advice. Dont take it. Its dumb. (me) Ive been through two majors myself, I started off in 16 (while taking classes in 8) and switched to 8. I wrote an entry a year ago about my switch into 8 halfway through sophomore year. Watch out, its a little dramatic. But, I ended up not at all behind in the coursework since Id kept both options open as a tentative double major and taken all the usual physics classes up until that point. Thats something you might want to consider, prefrosh/freshmen- taking classes in 2+ subjects first semester sophomore year (and/or spring semester freshman year) so you can really get a feel for the different departments. And they are very different. And yes, this matters. Reason #3, 4, n: why really its not only about what you love: Departments. Curriculum. Staff. Resources. Career options. Size. Flexibility to do what you want. Whats more important to you? Having a tried and true certified-damn-good education from MIT in a subject matter (in my case, physics)? Or, having the freedom to design your own curriculum and indulge in your fancies? This isnt rhetorical- it matters. This is what Im deciding between now with 8 and 8-B. To be quite honest I was 2 weeks ago leaning toward 8-B for the option of taking General Relativity or Astrophysics next term, however, I had this thought a few days ago that was big enough, at least in Lulu-world, to have actually tipped the scale toward 8. The thought was that I wanted a physics education from MIT, the way that theyve been training physicists for years, and though I may feel like I know better at times, I probably dont, and I could do well to finish what I started and trust in their judgment. Anyways, thats just me. Teaching styles vary wildly between departments. Yes, let that affect your choice. A clash of learning and teaching styles is one of the most disastrous things that could happen to a student in college. It will make you lose interest, and fast. Higher level math classes dont have recitations: you are expected to either understand the lecture material or visit the professor privately with questions. Are you comfortable in that kind of a setting for 4 years? Engineering classes have a lot of repetition and hand-holding, this can get annoying if youre normally independent. Course 6 is impersonally large and they compensate by having 4-5 person mandatory tutoring sections once a week, these are all things that you should know. To make things easier later on, before you pick a major, reflect a little on what youd like to do. If you dont have any idea (dont worry, I dont either), an important feature of your degree track should be later flexibility. Will it allow you to attend medical school if you decide? Grad school? Work on wall street? Babysit? There are lots of majors (8, 18, 6, 2, ) that are really good for branching out later on into all kinds of fields. Your interests may change, especially as you get deeper into a field, you may find it not at all what you were expecting (this happens all the time, I cant even stress that enough), you can develop interests in things you never thought possible: sometimes this is out of necessity, sometimes just because every subject in its own right is interesting (or else you wouldnt have organic chemists) and you just needed some time to really get into it. I see this happen all the time. Your interests may change, but with some thought put into your choice of major, this doesnt have to mean extra semesters or no diploma. Alllll this talking aside, undergraduate majors by name are not a big deal. Graduate schools, still a faraway thought for you guys, but looming ever nearer for me, dont give two hoots about the name of your major, they care about whats in your head, your coursework, your research In fact, Ive been told quite a few times that taking Grad-level courses and having more than one major will actually hurt your chances at grad schools- they like to see that you have built a solid foundation in their subject and view anything else as a distraction. Anyways, I made up a really crappy but maybe useful timeline for when you should be doing what with regard to your major/choice of major. And it starts NOW! (only if youre a freshman, NEXTYEAR! if youre a prefrosh). Fall Semester Freshman Year: Talk to people! Research! Ask Questions. IAP Freshman Year: Decide what major(s) you may be interested in/want to try out. Plan some spring semester classes that explore these options. Spring Freshman Year: Take these classes. Reevaluate. End of Spring Freshman Year: Pick a major. It doesnt have to be permanent, but youll make it easier on yourself to do some exploring before you pick, since, though switching majors is easy, catching up in classes, isnt. Summer after Freshman Year: You are assigned your department advisor! This is fun, because youll come back and meet them probably with food or canoeing involved (the latter may just pertain to my advisor may not be an actual rule). End of Sophomore Year: Deadline for deciding to stick with your major unless you are considering a 5th year or a 9th semester or you have already been taking cohesive classes in the major that you want to switch into. This is because most degree tracks are designed to take 2-3 years. If you havent started on that after the end of sophomore year, you may need to only consider flexible options for fewer requirements. For an outdated (but still interesting) overview of some departments published in 2002 by the Tech, take a look at this: http://www-tech.mit.edu/V122/N5/5majbr.5n.html. Anyways, Im doing this because my freshman friend Larisa is having a major crisis (that is, a crisis regarding her major, though it also appears to be quite troubling for her). Please feel free to ask questions about specific majors and I will try my best to answer them or find a satisfactory answer from someone who knows. I like feeling helpful. Sorry there arent any pictures in this one I took pictures of junior lab, so Ill put that together soon. -lulu

Communism in Albania - Free Essay Example

The Communist Party had been created in 1941, by leader Enver Hoxha and a committee of men. Communism in Albania never had existed up until 1941. Communism in Albania was a triumph because no one was attacking Albania and Albania had alliances which benefited the economy.Communism in Albania was a tragedy because Enver Hoxha took away peoples rights and lots of people were killed from being in prisons and camps. Albania was in an alliance with Yugoslavia, but Enver Hoxha decided to break away from Yugoslavia since he wanted to remain loyal to the Soviet Union.Albania would then gain help from China and the Soviet Union. In 1948, Albania formed an alliance with the Soviet Union.Albanias alliance with the Soviet Union had a few advantages. Enver Hoxha established a Stallinist style economy which included: collective farming, the redistribution of land,no owning of any property that was private, nationalizing industry and placing, and all trade was under domestic control.Trading with the Soviet Union was important and was a great economic boost for Albania. However, due to the increasing anti Marxist-Leminist ideas held by the leader of the Soviet Union,Nikita Khrushchev, Enver Hoxha, cut off ties with the Soviet Union in 1961. Then, Albania formed an alliance with China which lasted from 1961 until 1978. China was interested in Albania since it was looking to gain a foothold in Europe. The relationship between the two nations were ideal and likewise trade between the two countries helped Albanias economy and industry.New power plants and new industrial enterprises were underway. In 1978, relations with China came to an end and a new policy of closing the borders of the country preventing visitors from neighboring countries to come into the country was implemented. Enver Hoxha took over Albania and he took most of the rights that people had.Intelligent people helped to create the Communist Party.Since they now had power, they made the Albanian population obey them, they restricted their freedoms, and overwhelming them with all sorts of propaganda. The Communist Party took almost all of peoples rights way. Albania ruled through tyranny for decades. When Enver Hoxha ruled for 50 years, Enver Hoxha didnt allow people to travel, he prohibited religion, and he forbidded people to own any land. In 1944, schools were being controlled and watched by the government. The communist party organized the education system and they also re-opened schools. The Communists wanted the school system to inform students about Communism, and the ideas and principles that the Communist Party had. Klentiana Mahmutaj, a woman who grew up during communism, talks about how students were taught to worship Enver Hoxha. She says I excelled academically and was awarded the Communist red star in my first year and later on became a pioneer of Enver. Life for her in school wasnt too difficult, but life for her parents was hard. They both worked hard hard to provide a good living and education for me and my younger sister, she said. Her father hated communism, due to the lack of liberty and the harsh treatments that people received due to believing in free speech and disagreeing with the government. Her father had wanted to go west but he feared what would happen to his family, such as isolation and execution. So later in 1990, her parents were the first among thousands of Albanians to protest in the streets of the capital Tirana. Klentiana also talks about how women were treated in terms of jobs. Women became farmers, mechanics, engineers, doctors, scientists, doctors and university professors.Women also joined the army and acquired high ranks. The Communists promised that women should be as equal as men when joining the workforce. The government encouraged women to embark on all professions, including manly jobs . Women in their role at home were seen in the same way, and they werent expected to take care of children or clean the house and cook. I remember my father,a good-looking alpha male, regularly cleaning the house, cooking, doing school runs and helping with homework, Klentiana says.Women faced no barriers of gender discrimination. I remember my parents and their friends frequently praising excellent female doctors and teachers,Klentiana states. Media and communications in Albania were managed and limited by the government. At this time, there was only one radio station that people could listen to and that was Radio Tirana. There was also only one television channel and that was TVSH.People could only watch the TVSH and not any other channels. People were forbidden from getting information from other countries. People who were caught not following the rules, were arrested. Anyone who disobeyed his rules had cruel punishments such as execution and being in prison for a long time. Hundreds of people were executed just because they express their opinions, or because they asked for their rights. Enver Hoxha was remembered for building 23 prisons and 48 concentration camps. In an article from the Daily Sabah, one of the executed men, Skender Daja, who asked for forgiveness said, Even if I had 10 lives, all times I would have done the same thing.I would fight to be free. Bilal Kola, head of the Institute for the Integration of the Former Politically Persecuted said A total of 18,000 people were imprisoned for political reasons and some 30,000 were sent to internment camps within the country. Simon Miraka,a survivor of these camps talks about the tragedies of these camps. He had spent 45 years in a concentration camp, in the city of Tepelena between 1949 and 1954. These years were the harshest for his family, and about 400 children at this camp died, and the remains still are missing today. Miraka stated Even today I think how i could survive [ that camp ] since so many children died there. Lots of people had died in this camp from diseases, hard work, inhuman conditions,ill-treatment and starvation. In 1978, after Albania broke away from China, Albania entered into a state of isolationism. Enver Hoxha built thousands of bunkers because he was afraid of any invaders attacking. The building of these bunkers was bad for the economy since it took away lots of money for more important things, like housing and building of roads. There was propaganda going around at this time about how citizens needed to be defended and watch out for their enemy, and the construction of these bunkers served this purpose. At this time citizens were being trained in defense drills at least twice a month which potentially lasted up to 3 days. These drills were intended to protect citizens. These bunkers were made of iron, steel and concrete. There were nuclear bomb shelters underground and that was for the Communist Party. During the time of isolationism, there was a lack of food. During those years people got their food in portions. For a short period of time, the capital Tirana had no milk.In an article from the Christian Science Monitor it states,I waited five hours, says Eqerem Mete, who got out of bed at 1 a.m. to buy milk. And milk arrived but only for families with children and old, sick folk a liter per family. There had also been a shortage of eggs and meat. The biggest markets in Tirana only had a few cans of fish and dried up goods. The markets had lacked vegetables and fruit. There was also a shortage of bread. Since Albania wasnt an alliance with a foreign nation due breaking away from China, they were going through an economic crisis. There needed to be democratic government and a market economy. The economy needed to be improved and the government needed to be changed so that the country wont suffer and the same mistakes wont happen again. On April 11,1985, communist leader Enver Hoxha died and Ramiz Alia took over for 6 years. He was the second and last leader of Communist Albania from 1985-1991. The first protests started in the city of Shkodra in 1990.In the summer of 1990, thousands of Albanians fought for their lives to seek for freedom in the German,Italian, and French embassies in Tirana. In early March 1991, an election was coming and thousands of Albanians left the country and they went to different cities by ship and they wanted to live a better life. The elections in March 1992 ended communism rule which lasted for 47 years. Parliament then elected Salil Berisha as president.

Cultural Conflict in Schools

Cultural Conflict in Schools Introduction This paper will examine the elements of a cultural conflict that popularly occur in schools. As a teacher of a school with learners from many countries, there are numerous perceptions and ideas that conflict. This paper will focus on one incident relating to a child from a religious home and one from a non-religious home. A conflict that ensued whilst teaching about dinosaurs and its implications for science and religion is discussed. The Incident: Evolution versus Creation In a class where learners were taught about dinosaurs and the basic elements of our world, there was the need to show that the dinosaurs inhabited our world for some hundreds of millions of years before humans showed up. This is important in laying the foundation for future studies in the natural sciences. Hence, there was the need to demonstrate the nature of dinosaurs in the Jurassic Age and previous ages that came before it. Then, after a few lessons, one child from a very religious and traditional home with Judeo-Christian values rose up to question whether there was direct evidence that dinosaurs existed, because his parents and Sunday school religious class had taught him that human beings were created by God in the Garden of Eden. Another student from a secular home with a father and mother involved in science stated clearly without mincing his words that the Bible is a fraud and there is no evidence that the world was created in seven days and the world was younger than a few thousands of years. Basically, this would have been brushed off as a minor incident. However, the secular child had a lot of information about the subject. And he had evidence to prove some of Darwins advanced concepts and theories. He could articulate his views very well and there was a form of competition in the class. The smarter religious children countered him and those from other religious backgrounds started quoting the Bible about the fact that the world was created, and destroyed by the floods of Noah and we not being in a position to understand what existed before Noah and the floods. The secular children stated that Noah and his wife and three sons could not have populated the world after the flood. The raised issues of how Adam and Eve managed to populate the world if they were the only people in the world. These were extremely deep questions that provided an issue with the faith of people who have stayed religious all their lives and many got confused. The exchanges went back and forth and the class was heavily divided. This division reflected the broader divisions in America which is between conservatives and liberals and it became apparent to me that if nothing is done to address the cultural differences, there would be a problem that could go far beyond the class. This is because the children were most likely to report what they had heard to their parents and this was going to create a problem that could cause an administrative problem in the school. Therefore, it occurred to me that the problem was one relating to values, rather than mere childs play or arguments between equals. Reasons behind the Incident Culture is the software of the mind and it shapes the way people think and understand things[CITATION Hof12 \l 1033 ]. Literally speaking, culture helps to define what is sane and what is insane. It shapes what is acceptable and norms. Thus, culture has been defined as the way a group of people live and the relatively stable cultural practices that define a group[ CITATION Sch13 \l 1033 ]. The human being is programed to build up perceptions and worldviews over time. In doing this, people are supposed to give credence to some kind of authority or power over them. This would differentiate between right and wrong and define the parameters of actions and perception of information. For generations, people have relied on spiritual authority. Countries and communities have relied on priests and other persons with spiritual authority to define what is right and wrong and set the parameters for society. This led to religious values and rituals that define different societies around the world. Any attempt to go outside these frameworks and processes was considered to be blasphemous or heretic. History has shown that many people in Christian Europe were burnt in the stake for questioning the fundamental values of Christianity and one of them is the creation story. Anything that is said about creation that seemed to be in bad taste was suppressed by the Catholic Church and its ag encies. However, in todays world where there is a liberal constitution, anyone can say or do anything s/he wants about religion. Therefore, there are no real punishments to blasphemy or heresy. This means people could say and do whatever they wanted to. And the parents of these children could choose whatever they could say. Hence, they lived in their homes and were exposed to ideas of their parents. On the other hand, the growth of science and technology has provided alternative explanations to the genesis of society. Charles Darwin and other scientists have explained how the world was formed and this provides an alternative thesis to the creation story and how the world was supposed to have come to being. Therefore, alternative explanations could be put forth to justify different things in our world. These ideas have created a secular world and a religious world. These two worlds have their own followers and their followers, are equally protected by our constitution to teach their children what is right. Therefore, the class was opened to people from all backgrounds and all valid views and ideas were to be shared in the class. Thus, it became apparent to me that the real problem had to do with the differences in views of the world and its origins. The clash was because different people had been made to revere different authorities of information and of the world. Therefore, they were all bound to see things differently and build different values. The religious children saw their Bible as the main source of authority and the Word of God which must be revered and obeyed. The secular children saw the Bible as a cultural tool that guided a previous generation but not them. Therefore, they saw their views to be compatible with the realities rather than the Bible. Hence, the conflict was somewhat legitimate and it resulted from the natural conditioning of the minds of the children. How to Resolve the Problem The fundamental premise of the problem is that our world in todays world is heterogenous. Unlike a totalitarian country where the truth is one and absolute, the only way out was to create an avenue for difference to thrive in the classroom. In 15th Century Europe, it would have been completely proper to expel the children who viewed the dinosaur as the earliest creatures that evolved into modern creatures. This is because they denied Creation as per the Christian context. On the other hand, in the Soviet Union or todays North Korea, it would be completely acceptable to report these Christian children for upholding the view that the dinosaur was a creature that existed before Noah and the flood. Since Christianity was banned and the Bible was illegal. However, in todays America and in most parts of the world, it is unethical and inappropriate to take action against anyone. As a matter of fact, telling any of the children that he was wrong on his views would have been a breach of the constitutional rights of these children and their families. And their families could have come to the school to take action against the school. This is because the First Amendment of the US Constitution provides freedom of speech and freedom of conscience. This means parents can hold on to any view they consider to be appropriate and proper. The Fourteenth Amendment also gives parents the right to family relationships. This means any parent can teach his or her child any idea that is considered fit by them. Hence, the school has no power or right to instill anything in the child that is against the parents values. Therefore, it was a dangerous thing to take a stand on the topic and issue and support any of the views against the other. In effect, the right thing to do is to move the debate from an issue of whether Creation happened or not or a competition between whether Science provides a better alternative to Religion or not. This is because the constitution and laws of the land require relativism in the society. This implies that there are no absolute truths in our generation and in our country. Truth is based on what people value and what their cultures are. As educators, our job is therefore limited to the need to ensure that children thrive in their respective cultural systems in order to achieve the best and most appropriate goals and ends in life. This meant that the solution to this problem was to focus on the generally accepted facts and obvious truth. Like (1) the dinosaurs existed (2) the dinosaurs are now extinct (3) deposits of the remains of dinosaurs provide fossil fuels and this is the basis for petroleum. There was a non-judgmental view of the comments and opinions of the religious child as against the secular child. This only sought to divide the class further. Then, the class had to move on to provide a lesson on the need for mutual respect. This is because we might be different in the opinions and views we have as people. However, we have common values and standards that bring us together as human beings. We must respect them and focus on our lives and try to be the best we can be. Based on this, there was nothing to contend over in the class and focus was returned to the main issue under discussions – dinosaurs, their extinction, sources of fossil fuel and how todays world thrives on that aspect of history. Later on, they would encounter biology and advanced religion and they would have to decide what they believe. That is the essence of education – to enable people to become the best they can be within their own unique cultural and ideological framework or context. Conclusion Culture is fundamentally premised on the way people think and it is reflected by the series of values and authorities they grow to accept. This case at hand involved an issue relating to the dinosaurs, which threatened to turn into a debate on how the world came into being. This brought the religious up against the secular. However, the laws of the land mandates that there is freedom of religion and freedom to raise families. Hence, parents have the right to inculcate their values into their children. The classroom was not a place for the furtherance of any childs view over the other. Therefore, the right thing to do was to cut the debate and present universally accepted facts about the issue at hand and teach the learners to respect each others views. As they grow, they would have the right to take the decision they want to take on whether to remain religious or accept scientific explanations as absolute. References Hofstede, G. (2012). Jill Is Experiencing Discomfort And Anxiety - 1945 Words

As a promising young lady, Jill is experiencing discomfort and anxiety mainly from two aspects. The first point is the panic attack coming from her studies and career choice. Jill suffered a great sense of loss as she failed in the Bar exam and cast doubt on her career pursuit, meanwhile she is anxious about the hyper-competitive environment among her law school classmates. From another perspective, Jill feels insecurity in her relationships not only with her boyfriend but also with her parents. Given her great deal of anxiety and uncertainty, it is not hard to understand her obsessive and compulsive symptoms as extremely finicky with food and sometimes bulimic. Children with secure attachment would fulfill their intellectual potential, have good relationships with others and regulate their emotions well. However, Jill violated all these descriptions. As a good student, Jill should be able to pass the Bar exam, but she failed by only a few points. Instead of having positive relationships with her classmates, Jill is frustrated by the competitive environment in law school. Last but not least, she has a somehow secure 4-year relationship with her boyfriend, but she goes to panic when she feel her boyfriend does not understand her and emotionally present for her. What have happened cannot be changed, but we can change the way we look at them and experience different feelings towards them. As far as I am concerned, past-life regression could help Jill understand her relationships with her parents, her boyfriend and her classmates much better, and try to let go of that negative energy. Then, I would use mindfulness therapy to support Jill find her peaceful mind, integrate her shattered spiritual body and reach her higher spiritual guide. We will write a custom essay sample on Spoilage Rates or any similar topic only for you Order Now India ranked within the world’s five largest producers of over 80% of agricultural produce items, including many  cash crops  such as  coffeeand  cotton, in 2010. India is also one of the world’s five largest producers of livestock and poultry meat, with one of the fastest growth rates, as of 2011. India exported about 2 billion kilograms each of wheat and rice in 2011 to Africa, Nepal, Bangladesh and other regions of the world. Aquaculture and catch fishery  is amongst the fastest growing industries in India. Between 1990 and 2010, Indian fish capture harvest doubled, while aquaculture harvest tripled. In 2008, India was the world’s sixth largest producer of marine and freshwater capture fisheries, and the second largest aquaculture farmed fish producer. India exported 600,000 metric tonnes of fish products to nearly half of all the world’s countries. Lack of cold storage and harvest spoilage causing over 30% of farmer’s produce going to waste, India lacks cold storage, food packaging as well as safe and efficient rural transport system. This causes one of the world’s highest food spoilage rates, particularly during Indian monsoons and other adverse weather conditions. Food travels to the Indian consumer through a slow and inefficient chain of traders. Indian consumers buy agricultural produce in suburban markets known as ‘sabzi mandi’ such as one shown or from roadside vendors. As per the report by Shri M. S. Swaminathan (Planning Commission 1981), up to 40% of certain fruits and vegetables go waste due to their perishable nature and non-availability of appropriate post harvest infrastructure. As per nother study (TIFAC – 1996), wastage in certain food is as high as over 30% and in vegetables the losses are up to 20% to 30% at the post harvest stages due to poor storage, transportation, lack of infrastructure and the inadequacy of the marketing set-up. As per this report, India wastes more fruits and vegetables than are consumed in a country like U. K. The total wastage in all food sectors is high and worth Rs. 500,000 million. It is also estimated that the wastage cost of fruits and vegetables is Rs. 350,000 millions per year which is four to five times than those of food grains. Even in food grains the loss is reckoned at 5-10% on account of insect infestation and inadequate storage. Types of Food Spoilage Food spoilage and contamination are defined as those adverse changes in quality caused by the action of specific conditions or agents that induce physical and chemical changes and also includes micro-organisms, insect, bird and rodent pests. Mechanical damage is also instrumental in spoilage. Bruises and wounds are such defects, which frequently cause chemical and microbial spoilage. The primary causes of food spoilage include the following: †¢ Biological – these include micro-organisms like bacteria, yeasts and molds, and other agents like insects, rodents and birds †¢ Chemical – these include enzymatic or non-enzymatic reactions †¢ Physical – these include breakage, bruises, crushing and cut or otherwise dismembered surfaces Figure 2 depicts the â€Å"Food Pipeline† and summarises the physical and biological ways of occurrence of food loss. Meat and Poultry Processing The production of meat is steadily increasing with an annual production of 4. million tonnes, which is contributed mainly by pigs followed by sheep, goat, buffalo and poultry meat. Meat producing industry in India is largely confined to the unorganised sector and there is very limited upgradation of technology. The constraints are absence of farms for rearing meat producing animals and absence of cold-chain facilities. The market for scientifically and hy gienically produced meat products is expected to grow rapidly due to constantly developing urbanisation. As a result of changing lifestyles, the21 demand for ready–to–cook food is growing rapidly. Overall very little of meat production is scientifically produced, processed and packaged as branded products. Most meat consumed in India is in fresh form. Less than 1% of meat is processed into value-added products like sausages, ham, bacon, luncheon meat, kababs meat balls etc. Figure 6 gives the production of meat and meat products. Lack of cold chain demand makes the cold chain infra costly (more demand – more competition – lesser price), the additional cost (in comparison with non cool chain products) eventually gets loaded on the products serviced through high cost cold chain. Now, if supposedly some inferior product is available at a lesser price, very few in India shall buy a superior product serviced through cold chain, particularly when product in question is considered â€Å"fresh† only when it comes outside the controlled atmosphere (read cold store). Remember – fresh peas here sells @ Rs 150 a kg during off seasons against frozen at Rs 50 Kg. You need to have customers. Therefore, I am of the view that future demand for cold chain in India shall be driven not by fresh foods but by foods and pharmaceutical categories which compulsorily requires cold chain. Ready to eat frozen products, frozen vegetables, imported fruit etc comes to mind here. If these categories grow in India – infra to handle this shall automatically grow. Increased growth of cold chain shall drive down the cold chain price for more adopters to follow, reducing the cost. I can foresee a strong correlation between cold chain growth with growth of microwave ovens. At the end of the day it is all about markets. It is not only the demand of right products that hinders the growth of cold store industry in India, services too share equal blame Few years back we built a world class cold storage infra for potatoes and apples at the only clock auction market for fruit and vegetables in India. This cold stores had all the modern bells and whistles like pallets, forklift, screw compressors et al. Know what happened. Third party apple storage for trading at this store turned out to be a non-starter as apple trading in India is based on samples for small lots which could not be drawn out for inspection by traders as quickly as they are drawn out in an ambient environment or a traditional cold store. Moral of the story. Trade’s service demand dictate the cold storage needs. FTA agreements July 23, 2012 –  The Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, today met with representatives of the Canada-India Business Council in Montreal, where he highlighted the launch of a fifth round of negotiations toward a Canada-India trade agreement. A Canada-India joint study concluded that a trade agreement between the two countries could boost Canada’s economy by at least $6  billion. Jake Bralie Essays - My Ntonia, Willa Cather, Girls,

Jake Bralie English 152-5 Fairview High School November 12, 1997 Willa Cather's My Antonia (enter the rest of the title here) Jake Bralie November 12, 1997 Willa Cather's My Antonia: Success The American college dictionary defines success as 1. The favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors, 2. The gaining of wealth, possessions, or the like. This has been the general seances for the past hundred years or more. But in more modern days the prospective of success has changed slightly. It has shifted to having a good education, going to collage, getting a carrier getting married Les Misreables By: Victor Hugo , Valjean's success was represented in the form of going from convict to loving father of a daughter. The little girl named Cosette may not have been his true daughter, but after he had had dinner with a bishop that had seen the possibility of good in he started the transformation of his life. he met Cosettes mother and vowed to save her daughter from the place where she was being kept. The success Valjean experienced was what made his character the man that he was. But to Willa Cather in My Antonia, Antonia represents the highest form of success in t his life. Antonia's form of success is mandated by the way she follows the path in life that has been laid out before her. She by nature was a country girl. She only visited Denver once, and for the majority of her life she stayed in and around Black Hawk and Lincoln. She lived out the way of life that was most natural to her. She was so driven by that success that she had achieved that she became a mother prematurely. But she is so driven to follow her path that not even becoming a mother early could stop her from following her path. (320) ? Father Kelly says that every one is put into this world for something, and I know what I've got to do. I'm going to see that my little girl has a better chance than I ever had. I'm going to take care of that girl.? and she does. She takes splendid care of the girl and marries a man named Cuzak. He is by his nature a city man. But that wouldn't stop Antonia from doing what she had set out to do. Become a mother and a harvenger of life. Jim visited Antonia later in life but there was a twenty year gap in the time that they saw or herd from each other. When Jim saw her next he noticed this (343) ?As I confronted her, the changes grew less apparent to me, her identity stronger. She was there, in full vigor of her personality, battered but not diminished, looking at me, speaking to me in the husk, breathy voice I remember so well.? She had been through so much during her life, she had birthed a child by her self, and gone on to over ten more. She brought life unto
